Welcome to the official blog of "Behind the Paddle" Podcast, where we delve into the latest episodes and discuss all things related to sex. In this blog post, we will be focusing on the episode titled "Pai-slay is drag". Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a drag show? Well, on our podcast, we had the pleasure of interviewing Moth, of Moth to Flame events and Uncensored Market, about their latest drag show in paisley! We delved into the world of drag and discussed its link with queer culture, gender, politics, and pride. Moth shared some of the trials and tribulations they faced setting up a show outside the big city, and with both organisers and hosts being trans. It was truly eye-opening!
What's the Buzz, Moth?
Moth spilled the tea on the connection between drag and queer culture, gender, politics, and pride. It's not just about the glitz and glamour - there's a whole lot of heart and soul behind those sequins and stilettos!
Drag has a long history of being a form of political expression. Whether it's challenging gender norms, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, or simply celebrating diversity, drag can definitely be a powerful political statement. Pai-slay is a perfect example of using drag as a platform to address important social issues, while still being silly and having fun!
Unfortunately, misogyny can rear its ugly head in any community, including the drag scene. Moth shared their thoughts on the topic and emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all performers. Drag is about being free to express yourself, however that looks. As for cis/trans women doing drag, Moth believes that anyone should be able to express themselves through this art form, regardless of gender identity. They even promote the stars of Pais-slay as drag artists rather than, the more traditional drag queens, to move away from gendered language.
Drag is undeniably linked with queerness, as it provides a platform for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves authentically. They believe that drag has a vital place at pride events. It's all about celebrating diversity and embracing who you are!
One of the most exciting aspects of the show is its location outside the big city. Though they have had some negative comments on social media, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with audiences embracing the opportunity to experience drag in a new setting, closer to home. Moth's show proves that drag can thrive outside the traditional urban hubs and reach a wider audience.
As we wrapped up the interview, we couldn't help but ask Moth about their favorite moment so far. Moth said all of it. They are honored to have created a safe and inclusive place for all within their own community!
